BACKING UP YOUR HARD DRIVE: Turn your system on. You will need to have quite a few pre-formatted floppy diskettes on hand before you begin. Type CHKDSK then press [ENTER]. You will see a display similar to this: Volume MS-DOS_5 created 09-05-1994 12:53a Volume Serial Number is 373B-07FF 315645952 bytes total disk space 557056 bytes in 68 directories 185483264 bytes in 2099 user files 129605632 bytes available on disk 8192 bytes in each allocation unit 38531 total allocation units on disk 15821 available allocation units on disk 655360 total bytes memory 458896 bytes free Add together the lines labeled "bytes in xx directories" and "bytes in xxxx user files". This is the total amount of disk space your files occupy on your hard drive. If you are using 360k diskettes for your backup, you will need approximately 3 diskettes per megabyte of occupied hard drive space. For 720k diskettes, about 1.5 diskettes per meg will be needed. For 1.2 meg diskettes, well, a little over a meg will fit on one diskette. As for 1.44 diskettes, just under 3 megs fit on 2 diskettes, so add a few extra to your total for good measure. Make sure you have enough diskettes ready, as you will not be able to format more once you start. From the C: prompt, type CD\. This will assure you are in the root directory and that your entire drive will be backed up. Now, type the following: C:\DOS\BACKUP C:\*.* A: /S [ENTER] to backup to your A: drive C:\DOS\BACKUP C:\*.* B: /S [ENTER] to backup to your B: drive The system will prompt you "Insert backup diskette 01 in drive A:". It will also give you a warning that all data on this diskette will be erased. Put one of your blank diskettes into the drive and press [ENTER]. The system will begin writing a copy of your hard drive to the diskette. Once this diskette is full, you will see "Insert backup diskette 02 in drive A:". Remove the first diskette and label it C: BACKUP 01 and put today's date on it. Put another blank diskette into the drive and press [ENTER] again. Continue removing and labeling the diskettes until your entire drive is backed up. A message on the screen will inform you when the backup is complete. It is recommended you store the backup at another location if your data is important (such as business records). Use the same command to backup other drives, replacing C: with the drive letter you wish to make a backup of.
