Easter Eggs and hidden surprises!

When you think of Easter eggs, no doubt you think of brightly colored shells with decorations on them.  In computers, this term has a completely different meaning. Easter eggs are surprises or entertaining items that software writers and other creators hide in their work. For example, most every episode of Seinfeld has a Superman character displayed somewhere. Eggs are in the software sitting on your computer right now. How can you find them? Pressing a certain sequence of keys and mouse clicks will reveal the hidden code in most programs. Go to eeggs.com, they have a large list of documented eggs. Look for hidden pictures of Bill Gates, aliens in QuarkXpress, and Elvis falling with a parachute in older versions of CorelDraw. I tried a few of these, and I really enjoyed the pics of the programming team for Windows 98. Dummies.com/eggs has more of these fascinations. There's a pinball game hidden in Microsoft Word and a magic eight ball in Access.

Eggs can be found embedded in the hardware too. Some really creative techs programmed the HP 5100C printer to "play" a tune by varying the movements of the head assembly carriage! Too cool.

For those of you who were expecting Easter related websites, not to disappoint you, here they are.
